TIER 1 AUTOMOTIVE CUSTOMER
The Challenge
Our long-standing customer required a self-adhesive decorative trim for a car interior. LJA Miers was tasked with coating the material with adhesive and cutting the combined materials to shape for application to their injection-moulded assembly. Key priorities were quality, technical performance and price competitiveness.
Our Response
Drawing on past experience, we developed samples to optimise adhesive performance. The customer supplied the specified trim covering enabling laminating and pressing trials to be completed. The intricate laminated part allowed coating of the visible A surface while securing the B surface to the moulding for a “wrapped” appearance.
Over time, peel-back occurred on the B surface due to material tension exceeding adhesive bond strength—known as repulsion.
The Solution in action
Technical and quality teams investigated, assessing compatibility between the low surface energy plastic and multiple adhesives. Testing showed clear differences between adhesives of identical coat weight, with some achieving durable bonds and others peeling easily.
The Result
Lab testing for peel strength, cohesion, and trim compatibility led to a new adhesive recommendation. The customer validated the solution, selecting a formulation that eliminated the repulsion issue. Leveraging broad product knowledge and scientific testing, Miers delivered a brand new proven, reliable adhesive system.
At LJA Miers we pride ourselves in solving complex challenges under pressure — delivering solutions that keep our customers’ operations running smoothly.
